A man told me he has worked out the number and that it is about eleven months of income.
He is not being asked for it. Nobody has come after him and nobody is going to. The thing is old, it is closed, and if he says nothing for the rest of his life nothing whatsoever will happen.
And he has worked it out anyway, on a spreadsheet, at night, and he knows within a few hundred what it would take to make it right, and he has known for about two years.
He asked me whether he has to. I told him I would not answer that, because that is not a question one man gets to answer for another, and anybody who does it lightly has never had to pay one.
What I did do is read him a scene in Luke, and the thing to notice about it is who says the number.
Nobody asked him for anything
Read what happens before the number, because the order is everything.
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. (Luke 19:5, King James Version)
To day I must abide at thy house. That is the first move, and it is an invitation to a meal, not a condition attached to one.
Nothing is required of him at that point. There is no negotiation, no list, and no mention of anybody's money. Jesus invites Himself to dinner and the crowd immediately complains about the company He keeps.
And then, in the middle of it:
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. (Luke 19:8)
Zacchaeus stood. He gets up on his own and speaks first. Nobody prompted this. There is no recorded demand from Jesus at any point in the passage.
So the arithmetic follows the welcome rather than purchasing it, and that order is the difference between what he did and a settlement.
You are working out a number on the other side of a welcome rather than in order to get one. Luke 19:5 puts the invitation before anything is offered, and it is the same Spirit, Romans 5:5 shedding the love of God abroad in the heart, who produces what nobody in that room demanded.
He sets his own figure and it is above the law
The number is worth looking at, because it is not the required one.
The law on this is in Exodus and it is specific: restore what was taken and add a portion, and in the harder cases restore fourfold or fivefold for a stolen animal.
If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. (Exodus 22:1)
And Ezekiel 33:15 puts restoration in the middle of a description of a man who turns, listing giving back what was taken as one of the ordinary marks of somebody walking in the statutes of life.
Zacchaeus goes to the top of the scale and then adds half of everything he owns on top of it, and nobody made him do either part.
Which tells you what was actually happening in him. A man being made to pay negotiates downward. A man who has received something works upward, and does the arithmetic himself, standing up, in front of people.
You are able to set a number rather than negotiate one. Luke 19:8 has him choosing fourfold and adding half his goods with nobody asking. It is the Spirit of God, Galatians 5:22 naming goodness among His fruit, who produces generosity that no demand could extract.
What Jesus says about it afterward
His response is not about the money at all.
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham. (Luke 19:9)
This day is salvation come to this house.
He does not commend the figure. He does not say the amount was right or generous or sufficient. He names what has arrived in the house and He names the man's standing.
Which is worth having for a man with a spreadsheet, because the repayment in that story is evidence rather than payment. It is the visible outside of something that had already happened inside, and Jesus reads it that way in front of everybody.
Nothing in that passage suggests the figure bought anything. If it had, the crowd's complaint about Him going to that house would have been reasonable and He would have answered it differently.
You are producing evidence rather than paying an entry price. Luke 19:9 responds to the announcement by naming what has come to the house rather than by approving a figure. It is His Spirit, Titus 3:5 named in the washing of regeneration, who did the work the number is evidence of.
What I will and will not say about your number
I am going to be careful here, and I want to say why.
I am not going to tell you that you have to pay it, and I am not going to tell you that you do not. I do not know your situation, there may be legal considerations, and there may be people who would be harmed rather than helped by being contacted.
Take advice. From somebody who knows the actual facts, and if there is any legal dimension at all, from somebody qualified.
What I will say is this. The number in your head is not a punishment being administered. It is a thing you worked out, at night, on your own, without anybody asking, which is the same posture Zacchaeus was in when he stood up.
And a man who is doing arithmetic like that is not being hunted. He is being led, and those two produce almost identical spreadsheets and completely different chests.
You are being led rather than hunted, and the arithmetic is the same either way. Luke 19:8 has a man standing up unprompted with a figure he chose, and it is the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:14 saying as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God, who does the leading a person can mistake for pressure.
And if the number has been sitting on you at night for two years, say it out loud to a person: a counselor, a pastor you trust, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. A spreadsheet nobody else has seen is a heavy thing to keep on one screen.
So write down the specific thing you think this will cost, and pray one sentence over the list.

And take advice about the actual mechanics. There may be legal considerations and there may be people who should not be contacted, and a man doing this alone on a spreadsheet at midnight is not in a position to judge that well.
You are being led rather than hunted. Romans 8:14 says as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God, and it is His Spirit rather than a conscience under pressure who is named as doing the leading.
Nothing here tells you what to pay. That is between you, the facts, and people qualified to look at them. What is settled is that the man in Luke stood up on his own, chose his own figure, and was answered with a sentence about his house rather than about his money.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over a number is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God had a man stand up and set his own figure after a welcome that cost him nothing, so speak to the weight of the amount: you have standing to address it because Scripture already put the invitation first. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Luke 19:8 and Romans 8:14 handed back in your own voice. It is the same Spirit, not your resolve, that makes saying it a receiving.
- Amount I owe back, you are not bigger than what I have already received. The Word of God says to day I must abide at thy house, and that was said before one figure was mentioned by anybody.
- Four years of waiting for the whole sum, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am able to begin with the smallest real step, because Luke 19:8 has a man standing up and starting, and His Spirit works in me both to will and to do.
- Father, You said this day is salvation come to this house rather than commending a figure, and Luke 19:9 puts the emphasis exactly there. I receive that today, and I am writing down what this will cost and praying one sentence over the list.
