Confess Does Not Mean Announce It at the Front of a Room

I have met more people stuck behind this one thing than behind any other, and almost nobody names it out loud, so I will.

They are not staying away because they doubt God. They are not staying away because they like what they are doing. They are staying away because somewhere along the line they picked up the idea that coming back means telling somebody, and they have already worked out who, and they cannot do it.

A wife. A father. A group of men in a room on a Tuesday. A pastor who will look at them differently forever afterward. Whoever it is, they have run the scene about four hundred times and it always ends the same way.

I know exactly one thing that helps here, and it is not encouragement. It is grammar.

Because the verse everybody is afraid of does not say what they think it says, and I have watched the whole thing come off a person in about a minute when somebody finally read it to them slowly.

Read who is in the sentence

Here it is.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9, King James Version)

Count the people in that verse. There are two. We, and he.

There is no third party anywhere in it. No congregation, no group, no witness, no room. The transaction described has exactly two parties and one of them is God.

And the word translated confess is a word that means to say the same thing as. To agree. To stop arguing about what a thing is and call it what He calls it.

That is the whole requirement. Agreement, between two parties, out loud in a room where one of them is not visible.

You are being asked to agree with Him rather than to inform anybody. 1 John 1:9 has exactly two parties in it and no audience at all. It is the same Spirit, John 16:8 who convinces of sin, who does the showing that lets a person agree in the first place.

David says the same thing with the same absence

The psalm about this is even more explicit about who is receiving it.

I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. (Psalm 32:5)

Unto thee. Unto the LORD. He says the direction twice in one verse, which is what a Hebrew writer does when he wants you to notice.

And look what he says he stopped doing: mine iniquity have I not hid. The word is hid, not announced. The opposite of hiding is not publishing. The opposite of hiding is bringing it out where it can be seen by the One it concerns.

The verses just before that one describe what the hiding was doing to him physically. Bones waxing old, roaring all the day long, moisture turned to drought. He is describing what it costs a body to hold something, and it is not a religious description at all.

You have been carrying a physical weight and Scripture describes it as one. Psalm 32:3 names bones waxing old and roaring all the day long, and it is the Spirit of God, Romans 8:26 who helps our infirmities, who carries what a body has been holding on its own.

What James actually says, and what it is for

Now, there is a verse about telling another person, and I am not going to hide it, because a message that only gives people the comfortable half is not worth reading.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. (James 5:16)

That is real and it is good and I have seen it do more than almost anything. But read what it is for. That ye may be healed. It is prescribed as a means of healing, not as a condition of forgiveness.

Two different things. Forgiveness is settled in 1 John with two parties. Healing, the slow business of a thing actually losing its grip on a life, very often needs a person in the room, and that is why James says it.

And notice the shape of it: one to another, mutually, with prayer attached. It is not a report to an authority. It is two people who both have something.

So the order matters and it is the opposite of what most people assume. God first, and He is enough for the forgiving. A person second, when there is a person, and for a different purpose entirely.

You have forgiveness settled with Him before any person hears a word of it. 1 John 1:9 completes the transaction between two parties. It is His Spirit, Titus 3:5 named in the washing of regeneration, who does the cleansing that no confession to a person could accomplish.

And when you are ready for the second half of that, say it out loud to somebody safe: a counselor, a sponsor, a pastor you trust, a doctor, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. Not because God requires it. Because James says healing lives there, and because a thing spoken out loud to one safe person loses a size it never loses in a head.

Proverbs names what the hiding actually costs

There is a proverb that puts both halves in one line and it is worth reading as a description rather than as a threat.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. (Proverbs 28:13)

Shall not prosper. That is not a punishment being threatened. That is a description of what covering does: it takes up the room a life needs to grow in. Anybody who has held something for years knows the amount of daily maintenance it requires.

And Hebrews says the thing that finally settles the question of whether anybody could be surprised by you:

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. (Hebrews 4:13)

Naked and opened. Which means confession is not disclosure. He is not learning anything. It is agreement about something already fully known, which is why it can be done in a car with the engine off.

You are agreeing about something already fully known rather than breaking news. Hebrews 4:13 says all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. It is the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 2:10 searching all things, even the deep things of God, who was never waiting on your account of it.
