The Father's LoveMatthew 3:17

God Said It Out Loud Before His Son Had Done Anything at All

This message is for the reader carrying a father's silence they can no longer do anything about

A woman went through every box in her father's house looking for one sentence.

She was not looking for a letter. She knew there was no letter, because he was not a man who would have written one and she had never expected him to be. She was looking for anything. A note in a margin. Something said to somebody else and passed on. A line in a card that meant more than the card.

She found receipts going back further than she had been alive in that house, and a drawer of batteries and a photograph of her at about six that she had never seen. She found a folder with all her school reports in it, kept, in order, for thirty years, which is not nothing and which she understands is not nothing.

She did not find the sentence. There is no version of the rest of her life in which she finds it.

She sat on the floor of a house that was about to be sold and understood that this particular thing was now permanently unavailable to her, and that she would be carrying it into her fifties and her sixties, and that no amount of being reasonable about it was going to close it.

What God said, and when He said it

The moment to look at is the baptism, and the thing that matters most about it is the timing.

Jesus comes up out of the water, and:

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matthew 3:17, King James Version)

Now count what had happened before that sentence.

No sermons. No miracles. Nothing publicly accomplished. The whole ministry, everything anybody has ever known Him for, is still in front of Him. Thirty years of ordinary work and not one recorded achievement to put in front of a Father.

And the Father speaks first.

You are looked at with pleasure before any performance, and that order is the one Scripture put it in. Matthew 3:17 speaks it at a baptism rather than after a ministry. It is the Holy Spirit, described in that same scene as descending like a dove, who makes that sequence something a person can believe about themselves.

And He said it to His face

There is a detail worth noticing across the accounts. Matthew records it in the third person, spoken to the crowd. Mark and Luke record it in the second person, spoken to Him:

And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Mark 1:11)

Thou art. Directly. Out loud. To His face, where He could hear it.

That is the exact thing the silence takes away. Not knowing it, in the abstract, from evidence. Being told it, by the person, in words, out loud.

God did not leave His Son to work it out from a folder of kept school reports. He said it, in the second person, before there was any achievement to attach it to.

You are not being asked to infer this from evidence. Mark 1:11 has it spoken aloud and addressed directly to somebody, and it is the same Spirit, Romans 8:15 crying Abba, Father, who is described as putting the answering word in a person's own mouth.

Scripture does not pretend the silence did not happen

This is where a great deal of teaching goes badly wrong, and Isaiah does not.

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. (Isaiah 49:15-16)

Read the middle of that. Yea, they may forget.

God raises the most unthinkable case of human failure He can think of, and then, instead of saying it never happens, He concedes it. They may forget. It does happen. He does not argue with the reader about their own experience.

And then He puts His own faithfulness on the other side of it, and does it with an image of hands.

The Psalms do the same thing without softening:

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. (Psalm 27:10)

That verse assumes it. It does not promise it will not happen; it says what is true on the other side of it having happened.

You are not required to talk yourself out of the silence you carry. Isaiah 49:15 and Psalm 27:10 both grant the human failure in as many words. It is the Spirit of God, Romans 8:26 helping our infirmities, rather than your reasoning, who holds a person in something that is not going to be fixed.

What the Spirit is described as doing about it

Paul says something specific about this, and it is a job description.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (Romans 8:15)

Whereby we cry. The Spirit is not described here as improving your feelings about your father. He is described as producing a word in your mouth addressed to a different one.

And Abba is the domestic word. It is what a child says in a house, not what a citizen says in a courtroom.

John puts it as an exclamation rather than a doctrine:

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. (1 John 3:1)

Behold. Look at this. He is astonished by it, and he is writing as an old man.

You have been given a word to say to a Father who answers to it. Romans 8:15 names the Spirit of adoption as the one who produces it. It is His Spirit who makes an unfamiliar word come out of a person who did not grow up saying it.

And there is a verse about Him singing

One more, and it is the strangest verse in the Old Testament on this subject.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

He will joy over thee with singing.

That is not God approving of somebody. That is not God being satisfied with a performance. That is a picture of God delighted enough to make a noise about it, and it is in a minor prophet, sitting in the middle of a book about judgment, addressed to people who had every reason to expect the opposite.

You are sung over by Somebody who is not silent about it. Zephaniah 3:17 is on the page in as many words, and it is the Holy Spirit, Romans 5:5 shedding the love of God abroad in our hearts, who takes a verse that extravagant and keeps it from bouncing off.

The breakthrough

So say it out loud, addressed to God, and let Him answer.

You are not measured by what he did not say. Matthew 3:17 has a Father saying it out loud before His Son had done one thing anybody could point at. It is the Spirit of God, Romans 8:16 bearing witness with our spirit, who carries that order into a person rather than leaving it as a fact about somebody else.

And do not let anybody put this on a schedule. You are not late and you are not failing at something. Scripture concedes that a parent may forget, in as many words, and then puts its own faithfulness on the other side of it, and Christ is in you now by a Spirit whose named job is to produce the word Abba in a mouth that never learned it.

Nothing here promises the ache resolves. The woman on the floor of that house is not going to find the sentence, and the man in the car still gets caught out at weddings. You are graven on the palms of His hands, and He joys over you with singing (Isaiah 49:16, Zephaniah 3:17), and it is His Spirit rather than any closure who makes hearing that a receiving.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over what was never said to you is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God spoke over His Son before there was any achievement to attach it to, so speak to the silence you have been reading as a verdict: you have standing to address it because a Father settled the question out loud first. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Matthew 3:17 and Isaiah 49:16 handed back in your own voice. It is the same Spirit, not your volume, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Silence my father left me in, you are not the measure of me. The Word of God says thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, and it was said before one thing had been accomplished.
  2. Conclusion I drew from what was never said, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am wanted and I am spoken over, because Isaiah 49:16 says I am graven upon the palms of his hands, and His Spirit is the one crying Abba inside me.
  3. Father, You say it plainly, and Zephaniah 3:17 says You joy over me with singing rather than in silence. I receive what You have said over me today, and I am carrying Your sentence and not the silence.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
