Counting the CostLuke 14:28

Jesus Is the Only One Who Tells You to Add It Up First

This message is for the reader who can see exactly what following Jesus will cost them at work

A man could tell you the exact cost, item by item, and he had never written it down.

He knew which two people would stop calling. He knew which conversations would change and which one would not survive it. He knew the specific invitation that would quietly stop coming, and he knew which part of his week would become awkward in a way that nobody would ever name out loud.

He was not being dramatic. If anything he was being precise, because it was his job to be precise about things, and he had run the numbers on this the way he ran numbers on everything.

He had not written the list down because writing it down would have made it a real list, and a real list is a thing you can hold in your hand and look at, and he had a strong sense that once it was on paper something was going to have to happen.

So he carried it around instead, fully itemized, for about eighteen months.

He told them to sit down and count

There is a passage where Jesus does something no salesman has ever done.

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him. (Luke 14:28-29, King James Version)

He is speaking to a large crowd, and He is telling them to slow down and work out what this will take before they commit to it.

Then He says the price out loud:

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:33)

Nobody selling anything talks like this. You do not open with the total. You do not tell the room to sit down and think about whether they can afford it.

He does, because He is not selling and because He would rather you knew.

You are not being asked to sign something with the numbers hidden. Luke 14 has Jesus insisting on the arithmetic. It is the Spirit of God who keeps a person from making the calculation in a panic.

Paul did the accounting and published it

Paul was a man with a career, a standing, and a set of credentials he lists by name. He does the sum out loud in a letter:

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ. (Philippians 3:7-8)

Look at the verbs. Counted. I count. Do count them. This is bookkeeping language, used deliberately, three times in two verses.

And notice what he does not say. He does not say it came back. He does not report a return. He wrote that letter from custody, and he is not describing an arrangement that paid out; he is describing a valuation he made and has not revised.

That is the honest version, and it is the only version this site will give you. You are not making an investment and nobody here is going to tell you it comes back. Philippians 3 is a man stating a verdict about worth, and it is His Spirit rather than any outcome who makes a verdict like that hold.

The one thing Jesus attaches to the promise

There is a passage people use badly, so it is worth reading exactly as it stands.

Peter says, plainly, we have left all, and have followed thee (Mark 10:28). And Jesus answers:

There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. (Mark 10:29-30)

Two things in that sentence are almost always dropped.

The first is the content of the list. It is houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children. It is people, and belonging, and a place at a table. That is what He names, and it is a description of what the church actually is when it works.

The second is three words in the middle of the promise: with persecutions.

He puts the cost inside the promise. Not before it as a warning and not after it as a footnote. In the same sentence, in the same list, as part of what is being described.

What you are handed back is company and not a settlement. Mark 10 says so in its own words. It is the Holy Spirit who makes a table full of people feel like enough on a hard week.

The word attached to the man who sold everything

If you only knew about the cost you would expect the mood in these passages to be grim. It is not.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. (Matthew 13:44)

For joy thereof.

He sells everything, and Jesus tells you what his face looked like while he did it. Not resigned. Not noble. Not making a sacrifice in the way people mean when they use that word about themselves.

He had seen what was in the field. Once you have seen it, selling the rest is not the hard part of the story, and the parable does not treat it as the hard part.

You are not being asked to be brave about a loss. Matthew 13 puts joy in the sentence. It is the same Spirit who is able to make a valuation feel like relief rather than like courage.

What He does with what He is given

Paul, in the last letter he wrote, in custody, near the end, says this:

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. (2 Timothy 1:12)

Able to keep that which I have committed unto him.

That is a deposit word. It means a thing entrusted to somebody for safekeeping, and the confidence is not about the return, it is about the keeper.

And here is the part worth sitting with. Everything on your list was going somewhere anyway. The standing, the position, the invitations, the season of life you are in: all of it has a shelf life whether you hand any of it over or not.

You are not gambling. You are handing over what was going to be taken from you eventually, to Somebody who keeps what He is given. That is 2 Timothy 1 as it stands, and it is the Spirit of God rather than the size of the list who makes handing it over something a person can actually do.

The breakthrough

So write it down.

You are not gambling, and everything on that list was going to be taken by time anyway. 2 Timothy 1:12 says he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. It is the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1:14 called the earnest of our inheritance, who is named as the deposit on the keeping.

And nobody here is going to promise a return. You are offered a table rather than a settlement. Mark 10:30 puts persecutions inside the same sentence as the promise, and it is the same Spirit, Romans 8:23 called the firstfruits under which we groan waiting, who is named as what a person actually holds in the meantime.

Nothing here promises the cost does not land. Three of the woman's four happened. You have Somebody able to keep what you commit unto Him against that day, and a man in a field who sold everything for joy (2 Timothy 1:12, Matthew 13:44). It is the Spirit of God rather than the arithmetic who makes handing it over a receiving.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over what this will cost you is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. Jesus told a crowd to sit down and count before committing, so speak to the list you have been carrying without writing down: you have standing to address it because He put the total in front of you Himself. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Luke 14:28 and 2 Timothy 1:12 handed back in your own voice, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your volume, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Cost I can see coming at work, you are not a gamble and you are not a surprise to God. The Word of God says I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
  2. Fear of what this will take from me, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am steady and I am clear eyed, because Luke 14:28 has Jesus telling the crowd to sit down and count the cost before they build, and His Spirit is the one who guides into all truth.
  3. Father, You are able to keep that which I commit unto You against that day, and 2 Timothy 1:12 says so in Paul's own words from custody. I receive Your keeping of it today, and I am writing the list down and praying over it rather than carrying it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
