I timed a silence once, in a green room, on purpose, because a friend had bet me I could not sit in one.
Four seconds. That was it. Four seconds before my hand went out for something, and there was nothing on the table, so it went out for nothing and came back, and I sat there feeling genuinely stupid with my hand on my knee.
I want to be careful about what I am describing, because the version of this that gets preached is usually about screens and it is usually a bit smug, and I am not qualified for smug in any category.
What I am describing is older than any device. I did it with a room. I did it with a bar, and with a radio, and with talking, and later with a phone, and the device did not create the reflex. It just made the reflex free.
The question that got me was not how much time I was spending. It was this: when did I last sit in a quiet room and let it stay quiet?
And I could not answer it. Not because the answer was embarrassing. Because I genuinely did not know, and had not known for years, and had not noticed I did not know.
The man who wrote this had unlimited access
Here is the verse, and the important thing is who said it.
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. (Ecclesiastes 1:8, King James Version)
Solomon had the resources of a kingdom and a documented appetite for trying everything. Music, building, gardens, study, wealth, spectacle. If more looking would have satisfied the eye, his eye would have been the one that got there.
He reports back that it does not work. Not as a moral position. As a finding.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing. That is a fact about the equipment. It is not a fact about your discipline. Whatever you put in front of it, the eye finishes and asks again, because that is what an eye does, and it was never built to be the thing that gets filled.
You are not looking at a design flaw in yourself, and Ecclesiastes puts it in the equipment rather than in the person. Ecclesiastes 1:8 reports the eye's limit as a finding rather than as a fault, and it is the same Spirit, John 14:26 the Comforter, who fills what an eye was never able to.
Silence is not empty. That is why it gets filled.
Here is what I think is actually happening in those four seconds, and it took me a long time to be honest about it.
A quiet room is not empty. A quiet room is where the things I have not dealt with come and stand in front of me, in order, without asking.
So it is not that I love the noise. It is that I know what is in the room when the noise stops, and I would rather not meet it at eleven at night with nothing between us.
Which means the reflex is not greed. It is avoidance, and avoidance is a form of self protection, and self protection is not a character defect. It is what a person does when there is nobody in the room to help with what is standing there.
That is why the instruction in the psalm is not what people think it is.
Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
Read the whole psalm around it. It is not a quiet room. It is a psalm about the earth being removed and the mountains carried into the sea and the heathen raging. Be still is said in a war, not in a spa, and it is said by Somebody who is in the room.
You have Somebody in the quiet with you, and that is the whole reason the instruction is survivable. Psalm 46:10 says be still and know that I am God, which puts a Person in the silence rather than leaving it empty. It is the Spirit of God, John 14:16 given as another Comforter to abide with us, who is the one abiding when the noise stops.
The still small voice comes after everything loud has finished
There is a scene where a prophet gets a demonstration of this that I have never got over.
Elijah is in a cave, exhausted and frightened, and God tells him to stand on the mountain. Then comes a wind that breaks rocks, an earthquake, and a fire. And the text says something startling three times: God was not in any of them.
And after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:12)
After. The order matters and it is the mercy in the story. The loud things are not condemned; they are simply not where the voice was, and the prophet had to be through all of them before the quiet one arrived.
Nobody in that passage is scolded for the wind. And nobody suggests Elijah should have been able to hear a still small voice over an earthquake.
You are not deaf, and Scripture puts the voice after the loud things rather than under them. 1 Kings 19:12 makes the still small voice the last thing rather than the missed thing. It is His Spirit, John 16:13 who speaks what He hears, who does the speaking that a person cannot conjure.
Jesus put empty time in the schedule on purpose
If a person suspects that all of this is a religious version of a productivity tip, look at what Jesus actually does with His own diary.
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31)
Many coming and going. That is the first century description of a notification. And His response is not to teach them a technique for concentrating in the noise. It is to physically remove them from the room.
And the reason given is not spiritual at all. They had not eaten. He is being practical about bodies, which He tends to be, and which is one of the reasons I trust Him.
David goes further and describes what it feels like when it works, and he uses the least impressive image in the Bible:
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. (Psalm 131:2)
A weaned child is not a child who has stopped wanting. It is a child who can be near its mother without needing to be fed that second. That is the whole target, and it is smaller and kinder than the version people preach.
You have permission to be near Him without needing something to happen. Psalm 131:2 makes the quieted soul a weaned child rather than a disciplined one, and it is the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:15 crying Abba, who supplies the nearness that a technique cannot.
And if what stands in the room when the noise stops is more than one person can meet alone, say it out loud to somebody: a doctor, a counselor, a pastor you trust, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. Nobody should be alone in a quiet room with certain things, and that is not weakness, it is arithmetic.
So name it out loud. The reflex, and how long a quiet room has been getting filled.
You are not addicted to noise, and Ecclesiastes locates this in an eye rather than in a will. Ecclesiastes 1:8 says the eye is not satisfied with seeing and never once blames the one looking. It is the Spirit of God, John 14:26 the Comforter, who does what more looking has never managed.
And do not take this as a verdict on your seriousness. Elijah could not hear a still small voice over an earthquake and nobody in that chapter thought less of him. Jesus took His own people out of a room rather than telling them to concentrate harder.
You have been given a Person in the silence rather than an empty room to endure. Psalm 46:10 says be still and know that I am God, and it is His Spirit rather than your stamina who is named as the Comforter given to abide.
Nothing here promises the four seconds turn into forty tomorrow. Mine have not. What is settled is that the quiet was never empty, and that whatever is standing in it, you are not going to be in there on your own.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over what fills your quiet is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God said be still and know in the middle of a psalm about mountains going into the sea, so speak to the reflex that reaches: you have standing to address it because Scripture already put a Person in the silence. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Psalm 46:10 and Ecclesiastes 1:8 handed back in your own voice. It is the same Spirit, not your stillness, that makes saying it a receiving.
- Reflex that fills a silence in four seconds, you are not the one who decides what I do with a quiet room. The Word of God says the eye is not satisfied with seeing, and that is a fact about the equipment and not a verdict on me.
- Dread of what stands in the room, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am not in there alone, because Psalm 46:10 says be still and know that I am God, and His Spirit is given as the Comforter who abides.
- Lord, You are the still small voice that came after the fire, and 1 Kings 19:12 puts You there on purpose. I receive Your company in the quiet today, and I am saying out loud what the reflex has been and for how long.
Ecclesiastes 1:8
